The Research Computing team provides technology solutions and services that support the University’s research mission. We partner with faculty, staff, students, departments, and research administration offices to deliver secure, scalable, and innovative computing resources in support of research success.
The Secure Research Environment (SRE)
The UMB Secure Research Environment is a virtual computing platform
designed to safeguard sensitive and restricted research data. It combines a protected virtual desktop, controlled data movement, project-specific access, and configurable computing options so approved research teams can analyze and collaborate on data within a defined security boundary.
Projects can use the Standard SRE for a shared, preconfigured research desktop or work with Research Computing to scope Custom Compute when specialized software, additional performance, GPU resources, AI capabilities, or project-specific infrastructure are needed.

REDCap
REDCap is available for research projects that need a secure platform for building and managing surveys and research databases. Projects using sensitive data in the SRE can use the dedicated SRE REDCap environment. Normal REDCap use and surveys remain available through a web browser, while dataset downloads from the dedicated environment are available only from inside the SRE and analysis is expected to occur there.
Standard REDCap is also available for projects that do not require the SRE environment.
